Michael Dietler has been working since 1997 with a large multi-national team at the site of Lattes (ancient Lattara) in Languedoc, France. Lattara was a fortified port town of about 3.5 hectares on the edge of a coastal lagoon. It was occupied by Celtic-speaking people from the late 6th century BC through the second century AD, and it served as an emporion linking the local economy to trading networks bringing Greek, Etruscan, and Roman  wine and other goods to the region. The excavations have been on hiatus since 2014 while a series of publications are in preparation.
