Dendara, Egypt

Since 2013, a new excavation of the Oriental Institute at Dendara, the sister site of Tell Edfu, has been conducted by Gregory Marouard. Welcomed on this major Upper Egyptian site by the French Institute in Cairo, the project focuses on the long-term evolution of the settlement since its origins in the late Roman Period, with special attention to the 3rd Millenium BC. Recently, the most ancient evidence of occupation has been found, with remains dating back to the Naqada II period, about 3500 BC. Outside of the precinct of the Hathor and Isis sanctuaries, an extensive town is preserved on about 5 hectares, which has already provided archaeologists with major data on urban development and everyday life.
